Committees

The Association has established many Committees to serve the needs of the membership. Use the  Contact page to contact a committee chair using the email form

The Archives Committee

The Archives Committee collects, catalogues and maintains a reference library of materials and information about BKS Iyengar, Geeta Iyengar, Prashant Iyengar and the Ramamani Iyengar Yoga Institute and other appropriate yoga text and materials.

By-Laws Committee

The By-Laws Committee shall review and make recommendations to edit existing By-Laws in keeping with the purposes of the Association.

Certification Committee

The Certification Committee shall develop guidelines for the training and certification of Iyengar yoga teachers, which after being approved by B.K.S. Iyengar shall be given to the Board of Directors, incorporated into the Certification and Assessors Manuals. Notice of changes appear on the website and notice is sent to all Certified Teachers via email. The Certification Committee shall coordinate and oversee assessments, and shall provide a forum for complaints about the certification process.

Ethics Committee

The Ethics Committee shall recommend to the Board standards of conduct in student-teacher relationships and such action, if any, to be taken in case of violation of those standards; shall provide a forum for complaints regarding violation of the recommended standards of conduct; supervise the grievance procedure for such matters as are subject to the grievance procedure; and shall address other ethics related issues which may arise from time to time, all with the approval of the Board.

Events Committee

The Events Committee creates and organizes IYNAUS sponsored workshops and national conventions and develops criteria for the selection and organization of the United States Intensive study groups to Pune.

Finance Committee

The Treasurer shall serve as Chairperson of the Finance Committee. The duties of the Finance Committee shall include overseeing the organization's finances, advising the Board of Directors on all matters relating to the Corporation's business and financial activities, and preparing an annual budget for the Corporation for presentation to the Board and the membership. All fiscal responsibility for conventions sponsored and organized by IYNAUS shall be borne by the Corporation and included in the functions of the Finance Committee.

Membership Committee

The Membership Committee consists of an IYNAUS Chairperson and each of the Regional Membership Chairpersons to perform database and public relations functions. The Membership Committee shall be responsible for the maintenance of Association membership records which shall include maintaining contact information and preferences of members as well as dues and other payments either paid directly to IYNAUS or through Regional Iyengar Yoga Associations.

Newsletter Committee

The Newsletter Committee publishes and distributes information consistent with the purposes and functions of IYNAUS and reports on the activities of the Board on a regular basis.

Nominating Committee

The Nominating Committee shall prepare a slate of candidates for election to the Board of Directors, and a slate of candidates for election to the Nominating Committee, prior to the expiration of the regular terms of office of members of the Board and Nominating Committee, and in accordance with time limits with respect to elections set forth in these Bylaws. In preparing slates of candidates the Nominating Committee shall make its best efforts to take into account the regional representation and population density of the Iyengar yoga community. The Committee shall also use its best efforts to include Senior Teachers on the slates of candidates. Each slate prepared by the Nominating Committee shall be presented to the Board of Directors for approval.

The Nominating Committee shall be composed of five (5) voting members and the Chairperson who shall not have a vote. The members of the Committee shall be elected by the membership every four (4) years by a written ballot under the same procedure to be used for elections to the Board. The Chairperson and at least two (2) members of the Committee shall be members of the Board of Directors at the time of their election to the Nominating Committee. A Nominating Committee vacancy that occurs prior to the expiration of the term of office of any member shall be filled by vote of the Board of Directors.

Outreach Committee

The Outreach Committee shall work towards furthering the understanding of Iyengar yoga in the larger community. This shall include, but not be limited to, promotion of our Certified Teachers and disseminating information regarding the high quality of their training and assessment, making materials to this end available to our teachers, and creating a source of accurate information on Iyengar yoga for the use of the media.

Royalty and Scholarship Committee

The Royalty and Scholarship Committee recommends to the Board the uses for funds made available to IYNAUS through the Certification Mark and donations made for Scholarship purposes. Approval of the use of Royalty funds shall be made by the IYNAUS Board and B.K.S. Iyengar and/or his representative. The Committee sets guidelines for and administers the applications for these funds.

Service Mark and Certification Mark Committee

BKS Iyengar is the registered owner of the Iyengar Service Mark (the temple and hanumanasana figure) and the Iyengar Certification Mark (the temple and natarajasana figure). The Service Mark Committee facilitates the use of the Iyengar Service Mark and the Iyengar Certification Mark according to the terms of license agreements with BKS Iyengar regarding the use of each mark.

Store Committee

The Store Committee shall be responsible to purchase, promote and sell at wholesale and retail materials that disseminate the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar and yoga related products. The Store shall raise funds to maintain the purpose and functions of IYNAUS

Website Committee

The Website Committee shall gather and post information on the IYNAUS website(s) consistent with the purpose and functions of the Corporation.

Yoga Research Committee

The Yoga Research Committee shall foster medical research and exchange research and findings on yoga-related issues, and shall work in conjunction with the Finance Committee to secure funds and/or grants whenever possible.
